In a media interview with a local home improvement radio program, PAL President Luke Petersen shared the signs homeowners have to watch out for in their plumbing system that could indicate that there is a major problem brewing within. Petersen says that is homeowners are just carefully maintaining their home, and conduct necessary checks on a regular basis, they will not be able to miss these signs and could address them accordingly.

“They should be able to catch these red flags if they are highly observant and conscious about their plumbing fixtures, billings and the like. However if they are the type of homeowners who just use and use their fixtures until they are worn out then chances are the damage will be heavy and more expensive to repair before it is discovered and addressed,” Petersen explains.

Realtor.com discussed the same issue in one of their blog posts and mentioned seven signs that should merit an immediate call to a plumber. One of the signs they mentioned in the write up is low water pressure.

“In these cases, the problem can be remedied by simply screwing off the aerator, cleaning off the gunky residue, and screwing it back onto the faucet. But if that doesn’t restore your pressure to normal, things could be more serious—like a fractured pipe, an eroded waterline, or a water leak in the system. Don’t try to fix these compacted issues yourself—call in a pro immediately.”

The PAL says, the public should even pay more attention to plumbing red flags when buying a home. “Buyers should know that licensed plumbers can be of help when inspecting a home that they are planning to buy. Licensed plumbers like us are the most qualified people to carefully look into plumbing details, check possible issues, and see whether the plumbing fixtures are up to code. These are all very important especially when buying an older home,” Petersen explains.

Real estate website Redfin.com has mentioned several signs to watch out for when checking out the plumbing details of a home that is for sale. Poorly installed pies is part of the red flags mentioned in the write-up. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials

“Leaky pipes can lead to serious water damage. To know where a home stands, look for the warning signs: pinhole leaks, corroded joints and warn piping. If the supply pipes are galvanized, then they are going to be dated and will also need to be replaced. If you notice a restricted flow coming from the home’s drains, there’s a good chance the pipes aren’t big enough. Water pipes should be at least three-fourths of an inch at the main water source, and at least half of an inch in all other areas.”

The PAL says home buyers can be in a better position to decide on the home they are planning to purchase when it is professionally inspected by a licensed plumber.
